Industrial Abrasives - What Types Are Available?

Guest Post By David Fletcher
Today industrial abrasives in a number of different forms and will be used in a wide variety of industries. Normally such abrasives are used by the likes of automotive, rail, aerospace, steel, glass, ceramics and bearings manufacturers.
Most of us when we hear the word abrasives will think of sandpaper, yet as you will soon discover there are plenty of other kinds that are being used today. Not only do abrasives come on sheets but they come as blocks or even as wheels. In fact it is grinding wheels which are the most common type

of abrasive to be found in industry today. The industrial abrasives used today are the ones known as vitrified, resinoid or rubber. In this article we take a look at just two of these and which industries utilize them.

1. Vitrified Abrasive Wheel
This particular kind of wheel can be used in a number of different ways. There are some which are suitable for working on glass whilst others are suitable for wood. However, because of the strength of this particular abrasive material they are now being used for working on high alloyed steel.
There are certain benefits to be had from using this kind of industrial abrasive, especially in those businesses where work needs to be carried out on hard materials. The main benefits of using this particular abrasive are as follows:-
a. Very little if any coolant liquid is required to protect the material as abrasion takes place. As well as keeping costs down a company will help to protect the environment as well.
b. This is a material which causes no damage or burns to the surface of the material being worked even when being cold cut.
c. This particular abrasive can be used at high speeds to remove the necessary parts of the product and which means that the businesses productivity levels are much higher.
2. Resinoid Abrasive Wheel
This type of abrasive wheel again is used in a wide variety of industries. However, the main difference between this particular abrasive material and the first one we discuss in this article is it a lot less brittle and so is used in more heavy duty applications like cutting metals in automotive manufacture or to grind rail tracks.
Just as with vitrified abrasives this also has certain benefits that none of the others have. So just what are these benefits?
a. This one has the ability to remove more material in a far shorter period of time.
b. They have a higher resilience to side loads so are capable of being used in more ways for various different applications.
As you can see from above there are quite a few reasons as to why industrial abrasives are important to various different industries the world over. Along with ensuring that high productivity levels are maintained especially with the current state of the countries' economies, they are able to help with ensuring that the environment isn't damaged any further.
